Game On Dude Wins Santa Anita 'Cap
Chantal Sutherland rode Game On Dude to victory by a nose, becoming the first-ever female jockey to win the 74-year old Santa Anita Handicap. The win also provided Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert with his third lifetime victory in the "Big 'Cap" (March 5).
Harvick Wins in Fantastic Finish at Fontana
At the Auto Club 400 Southern California's Kevin Harvick chased down 5-time NASCAR Sprint Cup series champion Jimmie Johnson, passing Johnson on the final turn to collect the victory at Auto Club Speedway by a mere 0.144 seconds. Harvick led only one lap of the race — the last one (March 27).
Cantlay Ends Year as World’s Top-Ranked Amateur Golfer
UCLA sophomore Patrick Cantlay had a remarkable year in 2011, winning the Haskins Award as the year’s most outstanding collegiate golfer, qualifying for the U.S. Open and finishing the season at number one in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (August 28).
Bryan Brothers Overtake McEnroe's All-Time Record
Bob and Mike Bryan smashed John McEnroe's record number of weeks atop the ATP World Doubles Rankings. The L.A. team set a new standard of 271 weeks and remained the year's top ranked team in the world for a record 7th time (December 12).
