USC Wins the NCAA Men’s Team Tennis Title
The Trojans won the 2009 NCAA Championship, the first for head coach Peter Smith, by defeating Ohio State, 4-1. USC’s 17th title tied them with Stanford for the most all-time men’s NCAA tennis championships (May 19).
Querrey, Bryans Win L.A. Titles and More
Sam Querrey and the Bryan brothers won LA Tennis Open championships on the same day, at UCLA. Querrey’s victory in the singles helped catapult him to the 2009 US Open Series title, while Bob & Mike Bryan won a record-breaking fifth LA Tennis Open doubles title en route to reclaiming the world’s #1 doubles team ranking for 2009 (August 2).

Serena Beats Venus to Finish Season at Number One
By defeating her sister Venus Williams to win the season-ending Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha, Serena Williams finished the year as the #1 player in the world for the second time. Including her 2009 Australian Open and Wimbledon titles, Serena has won a total of 23 career Grand Slams, including 11 singles, 10 women’s doubles and 2 mixed doubles titles (November 1).
