Franchitti Wins Long Beach Grand Prix
The inaugural IndyCar Series race at the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach was won in dominant fashion by Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Dario Franchitti. Leading 51 of 85 laps, Franchitti used his Long Beach victory as a springboard to winning the 2009 IndyCar Series championship (April 19).

Jimmie Johnson Rewrites Auto Club Speedway Record Book
El Cajon native Jimmie Johnson won his third straight NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Pepsi 500, making him Auto Club Speedway’s all-time winningest Cup driver with four victories. The win moved Johnson into first place in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series title, which he later clinched for an unprecedented fourth straight year, breaking a tie with Cale Yarborough for most consecutive championships (October 11).
