GALAXY TOP MOMENTS 2009
Beckham Scores Against Barcelona at the Rose Bowl
In his first game back in Southern California since being booed by some Galaxy fans after his return from AC Milan, Beckham won over his detractors with a trademark curling freekick goal in LA’s friendly defeat to European Champions Barcelona at the Rose Bowl. More than 93,000 were in attendance, making it the biggest crowd to see a soccer game in the United States since the 1994 World Cup (August 1).
WINNING MOMENT
Galaxy Win Western Conference Championship, Qualify for MLS Cup
The Galaxy battled the Houston Dynamo over 120 minutes and two power failures to score twice in extra time for a 2-0 win in the Western Conference Championship, at Home Depot Center. The win gave the Galaxy their first berth in MLS Cup since 2005 (November 14).
Landon Donovan Wins MVP Award
Arguably the greatest player in the history of U.S. soccer, Landon Donovan won his first Major League Soccer MVP award. The Galaxy captain scored a team-best 12 goals and added six assists while captaining the club through a tumultuous year to their first playoff berth, Western Conference Championship and MLS Cup appearance since 2005 (November 19).
