The Los Angeles Sports Council asked fans to help select the greatest moments in sports for 2009 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Through balloting on this web site, votes were cast in 15 different award categories.
As in previous years, three nominated moments per category were provided by each specific team, university or association. Nominations in each category are listed in chronological order. Winners received awards created by Tiffany & Co. for the occasion.
Voting on this site began January 11 and ran through January 31.
Winners were revealed on Friday, February 19 during a special dinner and awards show at the new JW Marriott at LA Live. A blue-ribbon media panel selected and ranked the year’s overall “Top Ten” moments, each of which was recognized during the show. The Lakers’ NBA championship was named the top sports moment of 2009. In addition, the Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards were presented to Pau Gasol of the Lakers and world track and field champion Allyson Felix, and a special award for “Exceptional Athletic Performance of the Year” to Zenyatta for winning the Breeders’ Cup Classic. The awards show aired on PRIME TICKET.
The concept of a moment is loosely defined. It can be a specific instant in time (such as a winning goal, hit or shot), an individual or team milestone, an upset victory, a remarkable game, a special event or a career achievement. Nominated moments must have taken place in the local area, or have involved a local athlete or team.
