2nd Overall Draft Pick Doughty Delivers
Using their highest NHL entry draft selection since 1986, the Kings selected Drew Doughty, the draft’s #1-rated defenseman. Doughty has quickly become one of the leading candidates for the NHL’s Rookie of the Year Award – the Calder Trophy – and is expected to be a cornerstone defenseman for the Kings for years to come (June 20).
Brown Named 14th Team Captain in Franchise History
24-year-old right wing Dustin Brown became the Kings’ 14th team captain and the youngest captain in team history. A leader both on and off the ice, in the 2007-08 season Brown led the Kings in goals and led the entire NHL in hits (October 8).
Kopitar signs richest contract in Franchise history
21-year-old center Anze Kopitar agreed to a franchise-record 7-year, $47 million contract, ensuring that the 6-4, 220-pound pivot will remain with the club through 2016. Kopitar was the youngest player named to the 2008 NHL All Star Game and led the Kings in scoring in the 2007-08 season with a career-high 77 points (October 11).
