Chasing down favorite Monterey Jazz in the stretch, 5-year-old Heatseeker won the $1 million Big ‘Cap in authoritative fashion. The Irish-bred horse’s trainer for Santa Anita’s signature annual race was Jerry Hollendorfer and he was ridden by Rafael Bejarano (March 1). |

Zenyatta Wins Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic
Zenyatta roared from last on the back stretch to first at the finish line to convincingly win the Ladies Classic at the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita. Owned by Jerry and Ann Moss and ridden by Mike Smith, the 4-year-old filly extended her career record to a perfect nine for nine (October 24). |

Bejarano Sweeps All Five Southland Major Meets
Jockey Rafael Bejarano recorded the most winners at each of Southern California’s major meets in 2008: Santa Anita, Del Mar, Oak Tree at Santa Anita and both the spring/summer and fall meets at Hollywood Park. He joined Chris McCarron (1983) and Pat Valenzuela (2003) as only the third jockey in history to sweep all five in the same season. |
