WINNING MOMENT Tiger Woods wins U.S. Open in playoff
Playing on an injured knee that required season-ending surgery shortly after the tournament, Woods, who grew up in Cypress, defeated Rocco Mediate on the 19th playoff hole to win his third U.S. Open title and 14th professional major, at Torrey Pines (June 16). |

USC women and UCLA men win NCAA championships
In the women’s finals USC led after each round for a wire-to-wire win under tough weather conditions for their second women's national golf title, defeating UCLA by six shots at the University of New Mexico. In the men's finals at Purdue, senior Kevin Chappell became the first UCLA player to win NCAA medalist honors when he gave UCLA a one-shot team victory over Stanford (and two shots over USC) by making par on the 18th hole. The Bruins won their first men's golf title since 1988. (May 23 at New Mexico; May 31 at Purdue). |

State Amateur Championship held in Southern California
For the first time in its 97-year history the California Amateur Championship was played outside the Monterey Peninsula, marking the start of a North-South rotation for the event. Cal State Northridge student Nick Delio won the 36-hole championship match, at Lakeside Golf Club (June 16-21). |
