Venus Wins Wimbledon
Venus Williams joined an elite group by winning the Ladies' Championship for a fourth time, defeating France's Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-1 in the final at the All England Club. The L.A. area native's four Wimbledon singles titles are tops among all active players (July 7).
Davenport Resumes Her Winning Ways
Returning to the WTA Tour in September following the birth of her first child, southern California's Lindsay Davenport won her second title in three events by beating Ukraine's Julia Vakulenko 6-4, 6-1 at the Bell Challenge in Quebec City. Davenport's 53rd career victory tied her with Monica Seles for eighth on the all-time tournament winners list and positioned her to pass Steffi Graf in 2008 as the all-time prize money leader, (November 4).
Bryan Brothers Clinch Davis Cup Title for USA
Bob and Mike Bryan ended 12 years of American Davis Cup disappointment when they defeated Igor Andreev and Nikolay Davydenko 7-6, 6-4, 6-2 to give the U.S. an insurmountable 3-0 lead over Russia in the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Final, at Portland, Oregon. The Bryans faced just one break point in the entire match (December 1).
