The Los Angeles Sports Council asked fans to help select the greatest moments in sports for 2007 in the Los Angeles/Orange County area. Through balloting on this web site votes were cast in 18 different award categories.
Three nominated moments per category were provided by each specific team, university or association. Nominations in each category are listed in chronological order. Winners will receive awards specially created by Tiffany & Co. for this occasion.
Voting was conducted from December 17 - January 10.
Winners were revealed on the evening of Sunday, January 20 during a special awards presentation televised live from the Beverly Hilton Hotel on FSN PRIME TICKET, including the overall "Greatest Moment of the Year."
A blue-ribbon media panel selected and ranked the overall top 10 moments of the year and also selected the Sportsman, Sportswoman and Sports Executive of the Year.
David Beckham of the L.A. Galaxy was selected as 2007 "Sportsman of the Year" and track star Allyson Felix was named "Sportswoman of the Year." Brian Burke, general manager of the Ducks, was chosen "Sports Executive of the Year."
The concept of a moment is loosely defined. It can be a specific instant in time (such as a winning goal, hit or shot), an individual or team milestone, an upset victory, a remarkable game, a special event or a career achievement. Nominated moments must have taken place in the local area, or have involved a local athlete or team.
