Men's Basketball Team Reaches NCAA Championship Game
Capping an incredible March Madness run highlighted by a dramatic last-minute comeback against Gonzaga, the Bruins reached the Final Four and Championship game for the first time in 11 years, tying the school record for victories with a 32-7 record, at Indianapolis (April 3).
UCLA Wins NCAA Championships #98 and #99 on Back-to-Back Weekends
The men's volleyball team won their final 14 matches, culminating in a defeat of host Penn State in the national championship game, for UCLA's 98th overall NCAA team title and 19th in men's volleyball. A week later, the women's water polo team won title #99 in dramatic fashion, defeating USC 9-8 on a goal by Courtney Mathewson with one second to play; it was the team's second straight NCAA title, at Davis (May 14).
UCLA Creates BCS Chaos by Defeating USC
In one of the biggest upsets in the history of the crosstown rivalry, UCLA prevented USC from advancing to the BCS Championship game by defeating the Trojans, 13-9 at the Rose Bowl. Utilizing a tenacious defense all day, the Bruins sealed the victory when Eric McNeal intercepted a John David Booty pass with just over a minute to play, their first win in the series since 1998 (December 2).
