Irvine Men's Volleyball Team Wins 21 Straight
Highlighting a season in which coach John Speraw's squad finished second in the final national poll, the UC Irvine men's volleyball team won 21 consecutive matches and set a school record for wins with a 27-5 overall mark. Speraw was named National Coach of the Year and junior Jayson Jablonsky as National Player of the Year (January 31 - April 15).
Nixon's Buzzer-Beater Lifts Long Beach State Over UCI
Junior Guard Aaron Nixon hit an off-balance three-point shot from the corner as time expired, carrying the 49ers to a 75-73 win over UC Irvine in the Big West Conference Basketball Tournament Semifinals in Anaheim. The shot was selected as ESPN's "Play of the Week" (March 10).
Pepperdine Wins NCAA Men's Tennis Championship
Capping a 36-2 season, Pepperdine claimed its first national championship in men's tennis. Coach Adam Steinberg was named National Coach of the Year as the Waves avenged their only two losses of the season by defeating Texas and Georgia in the national semifinals and finals, respectively, at Stanford (May 23).
