UCLA TAKES NCAA MEN'S TEAM TITLE (May 24)
The UCLA Men's Tennis Team wins the NCAA team title on May 24 as the Bruins post a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over top-seeded and undefeated Baylor in the NCAA Final. This is their 16th time overall and Head UCLA Bruin Coach Billy Martin's first title in his remarkable tennis career. The UCLA men's tennis team can call itself NCAA Champions for the first time since 1984. With the win, UCLA (27-3) snapped Baylor's 57-match winning streak, the second longest in NCAA history, and finished as the #1 team in the nation. |
AGASSI WINS MERCEDES-BENZ TITLE (July 31) - Winner
Tennis legend Andre Agassi captures a record fourth Mercedes-Benz Cup singles title on July 31 during the 79th annual tennis event at UCLA. The historic singles victory marks his 60th career title -- and helps launch him into an amazing 2005 summer that took him to the finals of the US Open where he nearly defeated world's #1 Roger Federer, during the championship match. |
DODO CHENEY WINS FOUR AGE GROUP TITLES
The incomparable Dodo Cheney achieves another United States senior tennis Grand Slam "double" by taking all four USTA National titles in the Women's 85 Singles and doubles divisions in the same year. The Hall of Fame member (inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2004 by John McEnroe) has now won more than 350 USTA National tennis championships during an unmatched tennis career. |
BRYAN BROTHERS WIN U.S. OPEN DOUBLES TITLE (September 9)
Local tennis champions and Davis Cup stalwarts, Bob and Mike Bryan, capture their first US Open title in New York on September 9. The brothers have won two Grand Slam championships and 25 titles overall. The dramatic one sided win over the top seeded team of Jonas Bjorkman and Max Mirnyi (in just under one hour), again establishes them as the #1 Doubles Team in the world. |
DAVENPORT FINISHES NUMBER ONE IN WTA RANKING (November 13)
For the fourth time in her illustrious career, Lindsay Davenport ended the year #1 in the Sony-Ericsson WTA Tour rankings. She ascended to the top spot by winning the WTA Tour event in Zurich, Switzerland in October and held on to her number one position through the season-ending Sony-Ericsson WTA Tour Championships at Staples Center. With her six victories on this year's Tour, local Grand Slam and Olympic gold medal legend Davenport now has won a total of 51 career singles titles. |
