The American team of Tony Gunawan and Howard Bach wins a surprise gold medal in men’s doubles in the World Badminton Championships held at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim, the first world badminton championships ever staged in the United States, and the first gold medal ever won by the U.S. in world championship or Olympic badminton competition. In a thrilling championship match Gunawan and Bach defeated Indonesia’s Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto 15-11, 10-15 and 15-11 (August 15-21). |
