Former Southern California amateur standout Mark Johnson’s remarkable year: In quest of a career on the 50-and-over Champions Tour, Johnson turns pro at age 45, emerges as the medalist at the 2005 Champions Tour qualifying tournament, then caps off his Cinderella story in March by winning the Toshiba Senior Classic at Newport Beach Country Club by holing out a pitching wedge shot for an eagle three on the final hole. |

Native Southern Californian Tiger Woods makes a dramatic chip-in for birdie at the 16th hole on the final day and goes on to capture his fourth “green jacket” and ninth major championship title by winning on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff at the 2005 Masters Championship at Augusta National Golf Club in April. |

SCOTT MCGIHON TAKES AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP
In July amateur star Scott McGihon, son of prominent local golf pro Glenn McGihon, makes up five strokes during the final round, birdies the 17th hole in dramatic fashion and holds off five young players to capture his second Southern California Amateur Championship at Tijeras Creek Golf Club (July 10). |
JASON GORE WINS FIRST PGA TOUR TITLE
Valencia resident and former Pepperdine star Jason Gore rebounds from a disappointing final round at the 2005 U.S. Open at Pinehurst, wins three events on the Nationwide Tour to receive an immediate promotion to the PGA Tour, then completes a storybook run one month later by winning his first PGA Tour title at the 84 Lumber Classic in Farmington, PA by one stroke with a clutch two-putt par on the final hole (September 18). |
