NBA Season Begins This Week

Three weeks of tuning up finally gives way to the real stuff, as the Lakers open the season Tuesday vs. Houston.

The Lakers had a 2-6 record to show for their preseason journey, but head coach Luke Walton was pleased with the progression his young team has shown.

The Lakers had several areas that clearly need improvement, but holdovers from the previous season continue to express optimism about the team's direction.

The Clippers, last year's No. 4 seed in the West, ended last regular season with eight more road wins than the No. 5-seed Blazers, one more road win than the No. 3-seed Thunder and just three fewer road wins than the 67-win Spurs.

On the flip side, that meant the discrepancy between home and road victories for the 53-win Clippers wasn't particularly significant. That's something they hope to change during the 2016-17 season.

The Clippers went 29-12 at home and 24-17 on the road last year, and Chris Paul said the Clippers haven't made their home court much of an advantage or a tough enough place to play.

They open the campaign at Portland on Thursday.

The Los Angeles Sports Council is a non-profit civic organization whose primary purpose is to promote economic development through sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.

On behalf of the community, the Sports Council bids against other cities for the right to host major sporting events, often staging or helping to stage events after successful bids.

Founded in 1988, the Sports Council's efforts represent more than $1 billion in overall economic impact for the region and range from NCAA Championships to the Super Bowl, and from the U.S Olympic Trials to the World Cup.

The Council also works in support of each of the area's established sports teams and facilities.
