Dodgers Introduce Dave Roberts as New Manager

Dave Roberts, a mainstay in Southern California baseball for years, has been officially introduced as the next Dodgers skipper and the franchise's first minority manager.

Roberts, who called it a "huge day," was formally welcomed at a Dodger Stadium news conference Tuesday alongside general manager Farhan Zaidi, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman and owner Magic Johnson.

"For me to have an opportunity to put a Dodger uniform on again, it's come full circle," Roberts said. "When you look at the Dodger organization and the franchise, it's a lot of impact people and humans and athletes that made the Dodger franchise what it is today."

The native of Vista, Calif., was drafted by the Tigers out of UCLA in the 1994 Draft and, over the course of a 10-year Major League career, appeared with the Dodgers, Indians, Giants, Padres and Red Sox. After his retirement as a player, he joined the Padres as a coach in 2011 and remained there through the 2015 season.

Roberts is 43, 11 years younger than former manager Don Mattingly, and that's no coincidence for a club that management has repeatedly said will be "younger" going forward.

The Dodgers have reached the playoffs each of the last three seasons but have not won a World Series title since 1988, something Roberts is hoping to change.

The Los Angeles Sports Council is a non-profit civic organization whose primary purpose is to promote economic development through sports in the Los Angeles/Orange County area.

On behalf of the community, the Sports Council bids against other cities for the right to host major sporting events, often staging or helping to stage events after successful bids.

Founded in 1988, the Sports Council's efforts represent more than $1 billion in overall economic impact for the region and range from NCAA Championships to the Super Bowl, and from the U.S Olympic Trials to the World Cup.

The Council also works in support of each of the area's established sports teams and facilities.
